Minehead
Minehead
is a small town on the north coast of Somerset with a population of around
15,000. It is situated 22 miles west of Taunton,
on the edge of Exmoor and by the sea.
T he
town has a mild climate, being set in a valley, sheltered by hills, and is said
to have more than its fair share of rainbows. The old church on North Hill used to be
a beacon to guide travellers on Exmoor and to help ships into the harbour.
North
Hill, which reaches out into the sea, gives lovely views over the town, over
Exmoor, and across the Bristol Channel and Somerset coastline.
Minehead
is right on the edge of Exmoor National Park, and there are some lovely walks
across moorland and woodland.
Exmoor is famous for its Exmoor ponies
and wildlife, including badgers
and red deer, which are often seen.
Minehead's sandy beach is on the Bristol channel and has very high tides and strong
currents. The
harbour is at one end of the beach and mile-long promenade.
The
high street has plenty of shops selling everything you might need, plus a range
of gift shops, restaurants and cafés.
Pomander gift shop and
therapy centre sells
yoga mats, blocks, yoga bags, incense and gifts, and offers a range of
alternative therapies and treatments.
If you plan to extend your stay there
are plenty of tourist attractions in the area. Here are some useful links:
